Kate Middleton’s royal look

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Let’s dissect Kate Middleton’s princess-in-waiting look at a recent wedding, shall we?

1) A sunkissed tan.  Princesses don’t spend time locked away in windowless offices–they summer.  They’re also blessed with genes that allow skin to bronze the perfect shade of golden…never red…never orange.

2) Expertly coiffed, shiny, subtly highlighted hair.  Because nothing says royalty like the luxury of affording three hour, £650 a pop housecalls thrice weekly.

3) Bright, clear eyes.  It’s those genes, darling.

4) Softly gleaming teeth.  Not too white, of course - that’s for Hollywood.  So gauche.

5) Barely there makeup: light defined eyes, strong but well-groomed brows and–of course–flushed, virginal cheeks.  (The quiet confidence that comes from possessing a huge, life-changing secret?  Well, that’s just gravy.)

Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy stylin’ at polo

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy looked every inch the Professional Girlfriends this weekend as they watched their Princes play polo at Beaufort Polo Club in Gloucestershire.  Reportedly, Kate’s mom Carole was finally set to meet The Queen this weekend at Royal Ascot, but those rumors seem to have gone nowhere.

Kate Middleton at Prince William’s Order of the Garter Ceremony

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Princess Catherine…  (Yes, that’s how Kate Middleton really spells her name.)  It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?  Royal/Kate-style watchers were yesterday given the clearest indication yet that Kate Middleton will officially soon join The Firm with her all-in-the-family appearance at Prince William’s Order of the Garter ceremony.  Kate’s impeccably tailored suit, whimsical hat, and perfectly groomed hair and makeup are, as always, regal!

So, the Queen wants Kate Middleton to get a job

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

What, like being a fabulously dressed, glossy-haired Princess-in-training isn’t a full time job in itself?  (Those gams don’t tone and tan themselves, you know!)  Sigh.  Those royals are so demanding.

I want to know what kind of voodoo this girl is working to keep her hair looking fabulous around the clock, even while stumbling out of Mahiki at 2 am.

The 20 Hottest Royals

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Forbes.com has released their list of The 20 Hottest Young Royals, which catalogues the creme de la creme of unmarried royals under 35 years old.  So, alas, recently married Peter Phillips didn’t make the list, but those hottie Swedes did (Crown Princess VictoriaCarl Phillip and Madeline are all in serious relationships, but still technically on the market).  My personal favorite royal (collect them like trading cards!) Charlotte Casiraghi came in at number 5, after Prince William, Prince Harry, Zara Phillips and Princess Beatrice.  How Charlotte–Grace Kelly’s granddaughter and a dead ringer for Angelina Jolie–isn’t a bigger media darling is beyond me, but lucky for her, as she gets to have her rich, privileged, gorgeous cake and eat it in relative privacy, too.  C’mon–she’s stunning!

Royal anger over Hello! photos from Peter Philips and Autumn Kelly’s wedding

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for the English royals.  So, while it’s not getting much press on this side of the Atlantic, I’ve been carefully following the story causing English newspapers to wet themselves: the backlash caused by photos from last weekend’s wedding of Peter Phillips to Autumn Kelly.  Here’s the scoop: Hello! magazine paid 500,000 pounds (about a million dollars) to Peter and Autumn, who are both commoners without titles.  Peter, however, is the Queen’s grandson, not to mention the first English royal of his generation to marry, and so the public interest in his private wedding was high (although, let’s be real, people probably just wanted to see more pictures of Kate Middleton).  Royalists feel that the deal was tacky, and are angered by photos printed of the Queen and the wedding guests.

I think the hullabaloo is incredibly dumb.  With public support for the Monarchy perennially precarious, it should be a no brainer: photos will only drum up positive publicity for The Firm, not to mention allow Peter and Autumn to pay for the incredibly elaborate ceremony they were all but required to throw, but couldn’t possibly have afforded otherwise.  (The wedding was neither paid for with taxpayer pounds, nor by the Queen.  Were they supposed to fete themselves with the Prince of Wales, the Queen and other senior royals in attendance on their own “normal person” salaries?  What kind of backlash and sniffs about “respect” and “propriety” would that have drawn?)  We’re living in modern times (duh), not the Victorian era; yeah, selling photos is tacky, but I think the royal nose-upturning (I’m sorry, but did the Queen not just do a huge spread in Vanity Fair with Annie Leibovitz?) is even tackier.  If the Queen, Prince Charles et al. desire things like this to remain private, then they should become private citizens and not take any taxpayer money.  Otherwise…sorry, but in our modern society where the English Monarchy is really a tourist-and-charity draw and little more, events like a “royal” wedding are not only fair game, but the very reason a dwindling minority of us even care in the first place.

Autumn Kelly and Peter Phillips wedding photos

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Ashlee Simpson? Pete Wentz? Whatever! The wedding I was most excited about this weekend was that of Canadian Autumn Kelly to Peter Phillips, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson. Photos should be coming next week in Hello!, but the DailyMail has a sneak peek including an official snapshot of the couple with the Queen, Prince Charles, and the Duchess of Cornwall. (Apparently the Queen did not want any photographs of her to be sold to Hello!, causing a bit of a last-minute tizzy behind the scenes.) This wedding was particularly notable because future royal WAGs Kate Middleton and Chelsea Davy attended, and Kate was there in William’s absence. Many think they’re already secretly engaged…and theirs would (will!) certainly be the wedding of the century…

Wedding or funeral? I’ll wait until we see Kate’s full ensemble to decide…but really girls
