British Beauty Must-Haves

Friday, July 8th, 2005

I stumbled upon this British list of cult beauty classics while doing (gasp!) actual work, and just had to share. Some products are obsession-worthy in the US, too, like Terax Crema, John Frieda Frizz-Ease and Jo Malone Vitamin E gel, but others (like the Ruby and Millie Lip Gloss and the Marks and Spencer Shavata Brow Perfection kit) I’d actually never heard of. Check it out.Cult Classics (iVillage UK)(My personal list of must-haves? Skin French Hair Paste, Phytodefrisant, Essie polish in Mademoiselle, Lancome Flextencils, NARS blush in Orgasm, Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, Three Custom Color lip gloss in Trae’s favorite, Cowshed body wash in Mad Cow and KMS Turnstylr.)

2008, I’ve Been Waiting For You, Baby

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I made good on my promise to usher in 2008 with a quieter, more low-key celebration last night, having a few friends over to my apartment and then going to a fun, but not-too-raucous party in the Hollywood Hills.  Before we went out for the evening, we did the obligatory, “Let’s document ourselves having fun!” photos.  (Otherwise known as the, “We will never be this young or look this good again, so better preserve the evidence for posterity!” pictures.)  Once in the Hills, we all had our palms read by a psychic, and I’m pleased to report that mine gave me an excellent reading.  (And if she hadn’t, I would have just shrugged it off, of course!)  Hope you had a wonderful New Year’s, too!

With J. and D., at the beginning of the night (note the clear and bright eyes!).  One of my famous “We-took-it”s.

D. and I are in two totally different photos here; I appear to be striking some sort of Dynasty pose.  (”Luke, order caviar for the yacht or I shall fire you immediately!  And bring me Princess Fluffy!” is what’s probably going through her head.)

Yes, this is what we do.  We pose.

Me dancing around and taking photos of myself was kind of a theme for the evening.  Amazing (sadly?), I do this while sober.

Makeup used last night (Gee, do I have favorite brands, or what?  What can I say; they’re the best!):

FACE: Bare Escentuals bareMinerals foundation in Light (applied with the precision Handy Buki brush; LOVE this thing!), NARS bronzer in Laguna, NARS Orgasm blush, Bare Escentuals Clear Radiance All-Over Face Color,

EYES: Lancome Colour Focus Palette 4 Ombres in 4 Style, NARS Eyeliner pencil in Black Moon, Shiseido The Makeup Mascara Base, Shiseido Eyelash Curler, Lancome Courbe Virtuose Mascara.

LIPS: 1) NVEY ECO Natural Lip Lustre in Temptress; followed by 2) Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips plumping gloss in Kanani; and finally with a dotting of 3) NARS Orgasm lip gloss on my bottom lip

FRAGRANCE: Bond No. 9 Chinatown (This is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favorite perfumes.  It is so good.)

The Devil Wears Tresor

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

One of my favorite brands, Lancome, announced a few days ago that Anne Hathaway is their new face.  (Or rather, their new “ambassador”, which sounds so much more chic and soignee.)  She’ll be helping Lancome launch its latest and greatest fragrance, which will come out in September 2008.  With current and former faces such as Isabella Rossellini, Juliette Binoche, Uma Thurman and Kate Winslet, I’d say our Anne’s in excellent company, wouldn’t you?

An ethereal look like this is all about dewy, flushed, what-has-she-been-doing?! cheeks.  Get it with a reddish blush, such as NARS in Taos, an earthy eye palette of taupes, rust and bronze (right now, I’m using and loving Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Eyeshadow Quad in Neutral Cashmeres), and good ol’ Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.  Oh, a flawless complexion courtesy of excellent genes helps, too, but if your mom wasn’t a supermodel or if your dad didn’t make a pact with God, fake it with Bare Escentuals bareMinerals foundation and Bare Escentuals Clear Radiance.

Shopping for a makeup neophyte

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

My friend R. has a Ph.D and a sky-high IQ, but is something of a beauty dummy. (I say this with love!) Like many girls who haven’t been practicing their smokey eyes since the womb, R. is simply at a loss when it comes to beauty products, and will meander from one makeup counter to the next, confusedly touching all of the shiny palettes and tubes before giving up and leaving, muttering to herself she doesn’t need makeup, anyway. The environment and age and life take their toll on all of our faces, and a little foundation and bronzer can go a long way toward making up look not only brighter and prettier, but also more professional. A recent article in the New York Times. (no, not that article!) addressed the notion that wearing makeup and trying to look your best isn’t a matter of pure vanity, but of job security and career advancement, too. In much the same spirit, R. asked me to accompany her to Sephora for baby’s first makeup lesson. Our purchases:

Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals
Bare Escentuals Warmth All-Over-Face Color

Fresh eyeshadow trio in Chamomile
NARS eyeliner pencil in Black Moon
Lancome Courbe Virtuose mascara in Black

All of the above products are designed for maximum impact with minimal effort or expertise. BE Warmth is a great product for people who are scared of bronzer, NARS’s eyeliners glide on without any fuss, and Courbe Virtuose is the only curling mascara that I personally have ever found to work. I was particularly impressed, however, with the Fresh eyeshadow trio, which is a foolproof combination of good-for-day-or-night neutrals, and only cost $32.

I initially advise R. to buy NARS eyeshadow duo in India Song, since the colors are equally wearable, but of course it’s only two shadows for $31, so we decided on the Fresh trio. Now if only I could persuade her to let me post before and after pics on the blog…

Beauty Question: Bare Minerals, Bronzer and Self-Tanner

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

F. writes: Please tell me if your beloved Bare Escentuals is also flattering to mature skin?  (I’m a grandmother, and I use Lancome’s Imanence).  Also, what bronzers, or self-tanners, do you prefer?  By the way, I’m really enjoying “Beauty Confidential!”

Hi F!  Thank you so much for your email!  Bare Minerals is flattering to mature skin, but with a caveat; it’s often necessary to well-moisturize beforehand, as I’ve heard some complains from my mother’s friends that it magnifies their pores, or that they feel it’s cakey.  This is due to incorrect application on their parts, and when I teach them how to do it properly, they always fall under the BE spell.  Regardless, you’ll get best results from it by moisturizing after washing your face, giving the moisturizer three to five minutes to sink into skin, and then applying the Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil first over skin to prime it.  (The intro kit comes with two foundation shades, two brushes, Mineral Veil, Warmth Bronzer, and a glycolic/salicylic acid primer.  It costs $60 and is a wonderful value.)  Then, use the brush to lightly press the minerals onto your skin, spending about a minute applying it if you want light coverage, and a few extra minutes reapplying if you want heavier coverage.  If this sounds a bit confusing, I promise that it’s not hard once you understand how to use it.  I’d suggest going to your local Sephora or Nordstroms, and asking for a two minute tutorial. For bronzer, I have a few recommendations: my favorite is Bare Escentuals Warmth, but I also like NARS Laguna (good for darker complexions), Benefit Hoola, Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder, and Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Light (great for very fair complexions).  When applying bronzer, use the biggest, fluffiest brush possible, and start with a light touch.  You can always apply more, of course, but too much on the skin all at once will result in an unflattering, orangey flush, like how poor Katherine Heigl appeared at the Oscars!  Put the bronzer on the areas where the sun hits your face – I like doing it in a “C” around the outer corners on the eyes, on cheekbones, on the forehead, temples, and then the teeniest bit on my chin and on the sides of my nose. “Hint of Glow” self-tanning moisturizers are an easy way to get color without having to worry about orange palms and streaky heels.  Try L’Oreal Sunless Sublime Glow Daily Moisturizer or Olay Touch of Sun Daily Body Lotion.  If you want a “real” self-tanner, try St. Tropez Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion or Lancome Flash Bronzer Glow ‘N Wear Tinted Self Tanning Gel.  Shave, hydrate with a fragrance-free, light moisturizer (no heavy body butters or emollient oils, as they will make your tan streaky!), let it sink in for about ten minutes, and then go to town!
