How to Apply Eyeliner on Inner Rims (No Smudging!)
I spent my Sweet 16 in France, learning life lessons from a painfully chic French girl named Emilie. Two of the most important bon mots she passed along to young Jolie: 1) Always leave him wanting more; and 2) If you don’t drown your eyes in prodigious amounts of black eyeliner, you might as well be naked and just give up on life and die. Emilie was fanatical about lining her eyes, and it looked ridiculously amazing on her. I tried…but alas, I couldn’t quite capture her peculiarly Gallic insouciance and always looked one blink away from Crazy the Raccoon.
Over the years, I’ve gotten better at the eyeliner trick (lining the inner rims of both upper and bottom lashes, known as the waterline), which creates unbelievably fierce, sexy eyes. Exhibit A: below! (Exhibit B: Every boy under the age of 25 in Provence during the summer of 1995. She was a firecracker, that one.)
PS - We have been having a lot of age issues recently. Jolie realized last week that it is now physically impossible for her to have a Baby Jolie in her 20s…and then she was all, “Where is my life going?!” So, please forgive me for being a total narcissist…but dude–how good do my makeup and hair look here?! I can’t actually take credit for any of it; between the genuises at Neil George, and the pretty-making that is Bare Escentuals foundation and MAC eyeshadow, I’m just happy to have a not-awful, still-mostly-youthful canvas for them to work with!
So, step off, 30. We’re still rocking 29.

Somebody just asked me on YouTube what makeup I’m wearing here, so here you go!
- I applied NARS bronzer in Laguna all over eyes.
- Next I used shades from Estee Lauder Signature Eyeshadow Quad in Gold Opulence (includes a rust color, which I put in my crease)
- Then I used the Lancome Palette in Golden Audacity - it’s a quad that features a black color with gold flecks, which I put on my lid.
- I lined with Bare Escentuals Buxom Insider liner in Emerald (specifically designed for inner rims, I just discovered!)
- Finally, I applied a ton of MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash mascara.
- As far as the rest of my face, standard stuff: Bare Minerals foundation, NARS blush in Orgasm, and Bare Escentuals gloss in Kanani

Nadine, You look awesome! I’m a huge, huge fan of lining the waterline, and have tried a million and one different things to ensure long wear. My current regime is this: line inner lids (and outer top lid, but that’s irrelevant!) with Make Up Forever AquaEyes in matte black, and then go over it with a TINY bit of Loreal Telescopic felt-tip liquid eyeliner. I have to tap the felt tip on the top of the bottle a few times so that the liner doesn’t run when I put it on - takes practice - but it looks fab when done right! Hope all is well girl! xo

This is my favourite beauty trick of all time - I LOVE this look! (And you look great, by the way.) Most people are a little scared to jam a pencil in there at first, but once you do you never go back. I actually find it really handy to do this when I want my eyes to pop a bit but I don’t want to do a full-on smoky eye or liquid liner. I just line the upper inner lashline and it works like a charm!
