The look of the VMAs

Between Fashion Rocks, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, the stars have been out in full, look-at-me! force recently.  This year’s VMAs were infinitely better than the trainwreck that we had to endure last year…but the bar had been set so low that it didn’t take much to outdo it.  It certainly wasn’t as good as the VMAs of my youth.  Sigh.

Britney’s back!  Clear-eyed!  Smiling!  And…well, looking not too damn bad!  (C’mon, haters, let’s give a little credit where credit is due.  I missed you, Brit.)

I was not necessarily digging Lindsay Lohan’s ensemble and hair, but the mega-wattage smile and sense of grounded calm she was sporting is a million times more beautiful, anyway.  Nice to see the former party girls cleaning up.

Taylor Swift brings something unique to the table, and she’s talented, to boot!  More of her, less of The Hills girls, please.  (Also, notice how Taylor’s hair is straight around the crown and only gets curly below the ears?  It’s a good trick for modernizing curls and preventing them from straying into Grand Ol’ Opry territory.)

A friend and I checked out the after-party at the Chateau Marmont—or, more accurately, chilled in the 400-person-deep line outside before quickly fleeing—where we were nearly flattened by a stampede of paparazzi swarming Audrina from The Hills (speak of the devil!) as she made her entrance.  Check us out on TMZ tonight!  Good times!

And something similar happened with Jordin Sparks as she exited her Escalade…Breathe…Zen mode, Jolie…

Christina Aguilera was un poco over the top…but her performance was sexy, and–eh, what the hell–so is she!  I’ve made peace with my Christina makeup and tanorexic issues over the years.  (Who would have ever thought when “Genie in a Bottle” was released that this chick would be the last pop tart standing?)

A close-up of Christina’s bad-ass superheroine makeup and sexalicious (if a bit too wispy) bangs:

Pink, performing “So What”: I’m not normally a bleached hair fan, but she rocks it, and the cut is pure fabulosity

And, finally, we have host Russell Brand.  I lurve me some Russell, and he is indeed a huge comedy star in the UK, but I just don’t think his humor translates, alas.

Aaand, scene.  Let’s do it again next year, kids.

Pink’s performance was the best of the night. She rocked it and her look. I’ve always loved her ability to be famous and yet stay totally herself. As for the rest of the show, meh. I thought Russell Brand was great - totally pushing the line further than any American comic has ever attempted. I was SHOCKED at Jordin Sparks’ totally missing the point comment about how wearing promise rings are cool because not “every guy and girl wants to be a slut” and I’m disappointed that so few people are calling her out for the fact that she basically called anyone who doesn’t wear a promise ring a slut. And I thought it was lame that Russell apologized for teasing the Jonas Brothers about it, because that’s all it was and let’s be honest: We tease because we love.
