Mary-Kate Olsen on July Elle cover
Fess up: did you guiltily watch—nay, love—all the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movies back in the day? Don’t play like you didn’t see at least two seconds of When in Rome or Passport to Paris or Holiday in the Sun while flipping the channels on a lazy Saturday afternoon! (I’d find them while babysitting and coerce the kids into watching. Child abuse? Nah.) Of course, it seems like another lifetime, since MK and Ash have since grown up and gotten embroiled in scandals and gone to rehab and pioneered Homeless Hobo 2000 chic…basically doing everything in their power to make us forget they were ever two fresh-faced, apple-cheeked child stars. Mary-Kate does July Elle, looking IMHO not as gorgeous on the cover as she can…but seriously sizzling in the other photos. The fabulosity of her perfectly tousled hair makes me weep.

A simpler time. How long ago it seems…

She looks pretty on the cover I think, but she is over airbrushed (maybe?) and it doesn’t really capture her unique features (also, she is missing an arm). The dress also doesn’t really seem like her style. I love the other pictures though! I think her unique style shows a lot of her personality, and when you dress either of the Olsens up like something else, it loses a part of who they are. That profile picture with the floppy hat is absolutely gorgeous!
Also, I would still watch any of those movies if I saw them on tv today.

Thanks Ashley, now that one-armed thing is freaking me out! Seriously where did it go? You can’t even see fingers from her other hand on her hip, which is where you think the hand would naturally go. Anyway…
Wishing they’d put just a hint more color on her lips in the cover shot. I know you don’t want a really dark lip color with such dramatic eyes, but something less beige would have looked better. The bottom half of her face just looks lifeless to me because it’s devoid of all color.
On the other hand, I’m so glad she’s gone back to being blonde again. It suits her so much more than the dark goth thing she had going on for awhile.

Don’t worry Tamara, you can just see her right hand poking out from behind her back - it is a slightly freaky pose, though!

Does Elle Magazine try to put bad pictures on its cover? Remember the Amy Adams picture from awhile back? It’s kind of depressing to consider that was the best picture of her they could get. The Natalie Portman picture looked like she was standing around, waiting for the shoot to start. What’s with the cover shot selection?? Or is it a styling issue? Every other magazine seems to do so much better. I like Elle, I’m a subscriber, but this is getting old.
