Beauty Can Cure

To everybody who wrote and posted their thoughts, comments and prayers for my mother, thank you so much—it means more than you know to be blessed with your amazing support!  I’m going to Dallas next week to visit my mom in the hospital, and I’m both nervous and excited; somehow, because I am apparently in the running for the Worst Daughter Ever award, I haven’t seen Mama Jolie since August 2006.  (How is that even possible?)  I’m bringing two suitcases with me; one for my belongings, and one for the organic and paraben/sulfite/preservative-free products that I’m squirreling away to present her with.  I’ve finally picked a charity for my beauty sale with D., too: we’ll be donating all the proceeds to Beauty Can Cure on behalf of City of Hope.  The more I read about their fundraising efforts, the more excited I get, and so now, of course, I won’t be satisfied until I’ve raised one biiiillion dollars for charity!  (Well, obviously, every little bit counts, so if I raise even one hundred dollars, at least it’s something!)  If you’d like to get involved, I’d be delighted; email me at nadine@jolienadine.com and I’ll send you the address to mail your checks, which can be made to “City of Hope” and should have “Beauty Can Cure Fundraiser” in the memo line.  More to come soon!

    Dear Nadine,

Oh, great cause! And have a lovely time in Dallas. I’m bummed — BUMMED — that I’m not there, because I would have loved to have met you in person. (Although I imagine you will be super-busy taking care of your mom.) I grew up there and will be visiting my own mom (who still lives in Dallas) next month. Maybe next time!

    Salut,
    Marjorie

    Nadine,

I wanted to say I am truly sorry to hear about your mom. Remember, though, science can’t explain everything and things like a positive attitude and the human spirit have the most amazing effects of all.

My grandmother had a gall bladder rupture that caused her to have kidney failure, renal failure, massive heart attack, and stroke all at once from the gall bladder toxins poisoning her system. She was in a coma for a week. The doctors didn’t know if she would come out of it. She was in her mid-60’s but had led the lifestyle of a chain smoking alcoholic that didn’t have healthy eating habits for her entire life so that certainly didn’t help.

She did she wake up from the coma and the doctor’s told us she could go home, but that she didn’t have more than 2 weeks MAX. She was put on Hospice. After about a month, the Hospice workers shook their heads and left. She went on to live for about a year and a half after that. Maybe it would have been even longer if she hadn’t started chain smoking again. I will also say that before her coma, her face was covered in wrinkles -a la modern day Clint Eastwood. Tribute to a life long sun-worshipper/smoker/drinker who probably didn’t believe in sun screen, which isn’t a good thing if you are a fair skinned, blonde, blue-eye german/swedish girl. After she returned home, her face seemed like it had lost 15 years off of it. Her skin was smooth, almost poreless and alotmof the wrinkles had seemed to vanish. I marveled at the difference.

Anyway, keep your courage and your hope. Medical science doesn’t have all the answers. None of the doctors could explain my grandmother. I hope that you mother has a miracle too.

Ohhh, best of luck to your mama! I don’t really know what to say in situations like this, so… I’m praying for y’all, and I’m such a huge believer that staying positive really, really makes things better. :)

P.S. Oddly enough, I’m going home to Dallas this weekend - that is, if American gets their act together…
